Check me out – my first blog on my very own site!
Why now – I hear you ask?
Well – just over a year ago something happened that turned my life upside down and blew apart just about everything that had gone before.
What was meant to be a very minor operation turned into something a lot more serious that resulted in 2 visits to ITU, a further 3 surgical procedures and a total of 6 1/2 weeks in hospital. I can no longer enjoy a drink (more about that to come) but I do have a cool scar the size of a shark bite!
This inevitably had a huge impact on my mental health (again, more about that later) but I was very lucky in that I was able to access therapy which played a massive part in not only helping me deal with the effects of last year but also gave me some clarity on how I see myself and others. I feel more confident and ready to deal with whatever life throws at me.
As I came towards the end of therapy I knew that I wanted to pay it forward. I had a story to tell and a journey to share which would hopefully help others. A specialist charity Men Tell Health hosted my story which I shared with family and friends.
The feedback I received was immense and I guess led me here. I want to share more about my journey, more about me, more about my thoughts and feelings, what inspires me, what gives me that horrible feeling you sometimes get in the pit of your stomach, what makes me laugh and what makes me cry (quite a lot, as it turns out)!
I’m a quiet guy and I hate speaking in public. Social media, for all it’s faults has given me a voice that, as my confidence has grown I feel I can use to help others. I hope to write about a range of subjects including mental health, politics (sorry, not sorry) maybe a little bit of sport and music. You may agree with me, you may disagree, that’s fine – who doesn’t like a healthy debate. What I promise is that I will never intentionally offend. If I do please let me know straight away.
A little bit about me
Well I’m 44, live just outside Middlesbrough in the North East of England. I am blessed to be married to an amazing woman, Jo and I have 2 awesome 16 year old step-children. Nearly forgot, we also have a crazy dog Zac and a pet rat, Anna!
My career has mainly involved helping people find employment. I currently work alongside the probation service helping offenders into work or training. A very challenging and rewarding role. I’m a trustee for a very special charity, involved in an amazing project which I will tell you more about soon.
I love music, especially going to festivals and concerts. I am a long suffering supporter of Middlesbrough FC although the good times more than make up for the not so good times.
Thank you for reading, I would love for you to join me on this journey to who knows where. Please get in touch. I’m very new to this so any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Until next time!
